Report

Wycombe Wanderers are currently 8th in League One with a game in hand on most of the top 7 other than Coventry. From the start of the season until the New Year, they were the form side with 12 wins out of 23 games and only 4 losses. In 2020, they’ve lost more games (5) in only 11 matches which is 12th in form for the New Year.

Wycombe are a direct team with a main focal point up front in Adebayo Akinfenwa. They’re 23rd in ball possession (41.7%), play the least number of passes per possession (9.5), and have the lowest passing accuracy, yet Akinfenwa is 5th in the league in touches in the penalty area (the team is 9th) and 2nd in headers.

Their keeper, Ryan Allsop, has been a big part of helping them have a positive goal difference (+5) with 60% of his saves being reflex saves, which is third most in the league.

Defensive midfielder, Dominic Gape, has the most defensive duels for the team and is 6th in the league overall while Curtis Thompson is 11th for Per game duels. This is indicates that their defensive midfield is their first line of defense. It seems they play mostly in two-thirds, the front and back.

They pack the defense in the middle while still providing enough support for Akinfenwa up front with their full backs instrumental in launching attacks, particularly left back Joe Jacobson. Jacobson is top 20 in both long passes and progressive passes in the league.

David Wheeler joins Akinfenwa in the top 15 in the league for aerial duels just to highlight that Wycombe are not leaving the big striker on his lonesome although he is their clear focal point in attack.

Player like Paul Smyth and Fred Onyedinma are comfortable taking players on which gives Wycombe another avenue apart from just launching balls into the area. They do get a lot of penalties through the penalty box pressure as we can see with Jacobson leading the league in penalties scored (7).

Overall, Wycombe have been surprise packets this season with many expecting them to be battling for survival. As their recent form suggest though, the surprise might be over. Changing up their attacking options and being a little less predictable would force the opposition to stay on their toes.
