Summary
We can see the gap at the top between the top two, Celtic and Rangers, and the top two with the rest of the league. Perhaps not a surprise but it shows that both side spend a lot of the time and their actions on attack. Their DEF VPMs are not the highest by any means because they don’t have to do as much of it as other teams but when they do, it is often successful.
An imbalance as large as the one between the ATT VPM and DEF VPM of the Glasgow giants, is more than ok when it is in favour of the ATT VPM. Usually, a high scoring balance is also desirable and something you’re more likely to see in a more even competition. Ultimately though, a high ATT VPM will generally equate to success on the pitch.
We can see with Hearts at the bottom of the table that they have one of the better ATT VPMs but the lowest DEF VPM which given their position would suggest that their defense were not successful enough in their actions.
Having conceded the second most goals, with equal most losses and second most draws, it supports this theory. Strengthening the defense could’ve saved Hearts from relegation.
A few clubs have the opposite problem. Ross County and Hamilton Academical both were under a lot of defensive pressure that they couldn’t do much in attack. There defensive VPMs are as high as they are from sheer volume of actions from not being able to retain possession or use it to put pressure on their opposition.
Aberdeen, Motherwell and Hibs have similar issues. They would all like to switch their ATT and DEF VPMs around for better balance for success.
All three do very well until the final third. Their delivery and creativity is not consistent enough. Hibs and Aberdeen also waste too many attacks on low return actions. Motherwell need to improve their overall distribution if they want to redress their balance in the attacking favour.
All three of their attacks need more chances created for them by either changing the avenue or attack or bringing in personnel with an eye for a pass.
